Frequently Asked Questions
For more questions about Lucent Yoga, please fill our Contact Us or call 218-227-3229
There is no prior yoga experience required at Lucent Yoga. Our instructors will help you with the appropriate poses based on your comfort level. We welcome all experience levels at all our classes.
Yoga has many benefits, both physical and psychological. Among some of the physical benefits are improved flexibility, strength and balance. Studies show that a continued yoga practice can increase serotonin levels, which counteracts depression and sadness. Yoga can also produce a calming, restorative balance to your mind as you shift your focus to the present, slow your breath, and begin to let go of your every day worries. That is just for starters!
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your first class. That will give you enough time to fill out our waiver, answer any questions you may have, meet your instructor, and provide you with enough time to settle into your class.
Lucent Yoga has some yoga accessories that you can use such as straps, blocks, and mats (limited quantities). Once you’ve got the basics of yoga down, you may want to pick out some of those items for yourself. For now, here are a few essentials to help you get prepared for your first or next class.
A Good Water Bottle
Lucent Yoga has the best drinking water system available from PureWater Technology of the North with a state-of-the-art filtration and sanitization system, bring your own water bottle and taste the difference. It’s important to stay hydrated, no matter what style of yoga you practice and Lucent has you covered here!
A Yoga Mat
Lucent Yoga has mats for use, but it’s a good idea to bring your own if you have one.
A Mat Towel
Depending on your preferred style of yoga, you may end up sweating quite a bit during your practice. This can make your mat slippery and dangerous, plus you probably don’t want to worry about sweat stinging your eyes when you’re trying to focus and balance. That’s where a good mat towel comes into play.
A standard hand or beach towel usually works just fine to soak up the sweat, but if you’re dedicated to Bikram or Power Yoga you may want to check out yoga-specific towels, which fit the entire length of your mat and are made from extra-absorbent material that dries quickly. Some of these yoga towels even have rubber nubs on the bottom to further prevent slippage.

Post-yoga snack
Depending on what time of day you’ve scheduled for yourself to practice, there is nothing worse than finishing a rigorous session and suddenly feeling like you’re so starving you might very well gnaw off your left arm. Rather than find yourself in a pinch, pack a protein or granola bar with you ESPECIALLY if you’re someone who suffers from episodes of low blood sugar. If you’re meeting a friend for dinner, tea, or drinks afterward (because you have your rockin’ post-yoga outfit packed and ready to go), it still can’t hurt to have something small on hand—like a handful of almonds—to help recharge your energy reserves.
Don’t Stress!
Take a deep breath and remember that a desire to learn is the most important thing you need to begin a yoga practice. If you approach yoga with an open mind, the items you’ve brought to class will matter much less in the long run than the connection you may discover between your body, mind, and spirit.
Ready to book you class? You can do it online right here BOOK CLASS Lucent Yoga is a safe, welcoming space where you can wear whatever makes you comfortable. If you’re worried about your clothes or you’re feeling self-conscious, just know that you’re not alone. Everyone has questions, especially in the beginning. You can read our advice here, or contact us at any time.
Can I wear a t-shirt? A tank top? Gym shorts?
Yes, yes and yes! The most important thing is that you’re comfortable — physically and emotionally — with whatever you choose to wear.
Dress to move
Yoga is a physical practice. You will be moving, stretching and twisting, which means your clothes should allow you to move freely and easily in all directions. While baggy t-shirts are certainly fine, some members wear tighter-fitting clothes, since they don’t get in your way as much during class. For example, during downward dog, a baggy shirt can end up in your face, which can be distracting.
What will other people think about my outfit?
At Lucent Yoga, there is no “right” outfit, because the only person you’re dressing for is you. Here, you’ll see people of all ages, shapes and sizes — which means you’ll see everything from sports bras and tank tops to long sleeves and sweatshirts. While it’s common to think that everyone is looking at you (especially when you’re new), remember that everyone here is focused on their own practice.
What do most people actually wear?
Here’s what you’ll probably see at Lucent Yoga:
Women (tops)
Most common: Tank top or sweat-wicking t-shirt
Also common: Loose t-shirt, long-sleeve shirt, sports bra
Women (bottoms)
Most common: Yoga pants
Also common: Tights, capris, shorts
Men (tops)
Most common: Sweat-wicking t-shirt, tank top or muscle t-shirt
Also common: Loose t-shirt, long-sleeve shirt or no shirt
Men (bottoms)
Most common: Gym shorts, sometimes with compression shorts underneath
Also common: Yoga pants
You don’t have to buy new yoga clothes (unless you want to!)
If you already have clothes that work for you, you’re all set! In fact, we recommend wearing whatever you already have at first, and then buying new clothes only if you need them, after you see what works for you in class.
Watches, smartwatches, fitness trackers and jewelry
You’re welcome to wear any accessories as long as they don’t get in your way or distract others. If you’d like to wear a smartwatch or fitness tracker during class (many members do), please just silence it so it doesn’t beep or buzz during class time. And just be careful with any dangly jewelry that could get caught in your hair or your clothes as you move around.
Going barefoot
Most people go barefoot in class. Being barefoot helps develop your balance, get a better feel for how your body moves, and keep a grip on your mat. If you choose to go barefoot, you can leave your shoes on the floor mat or our cubby. Of course, if you prefer not to be barefoot during class, you’re always welcome to keep your socks on. Some companies even make special yoga socks!
Private changing area
You’re welcome to change into (or out of) your yoga clothes here. We have a private, women’s bathroom with shower that is available at any time before, during or after class.
What to do with your coat, purse, shoes, etc.
We have cubbies at the side of the studio room when you first walk in, most people leave their personal items in one of these areas.
Can I practice yoga while pregnant?
Most likely, but it is important to speak with your doctor beforehand to decide which classes are appropriate for your body. In addition to that, it is always important to speak with your instructor before class so they can advise you of proper modifications to the poses you will be practicing.
